Study in Sweden
Sweden offers internationally oriented higher education in technology, engineering, sustainability, life sciences, design and research, with many English-taught master's courses. Students planning 2027 entry should account for the higher-education permit rules introduced on 11 June 2026, including semester work limits and study progress, and use the 2026 maintenance amount only as a dated reference until the 2027 figure is published.
Common questions
Can international students work unlimited hours?
Not under the rules applying to relevant first- and second-cycle permits from 11 June 2026: the normal limit is 15 hours per week during semesters, with summer work without that hourly limit and specified exceptions.
How much maintenance money is required?
The Swedish Migration Agency's 2026 figure is SEK 10,656 per month. Recheck the 2027 amount and any family-member requirement when applying.
How long can I stay after graduation?
Eligible Bachelor's/Master's graduates may get up to one year to seek work or explore a business; doctoral graduates may be granted between one year and 18 months. Apply before the current permit expires.
What study progress is needed?
For relevant extension rules, current guidance states 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits per year from the second year. Check whether the rule applies to your permit and programme.
Can family members accompany a student?
Eligible family members may apply, but their residence and maintenance conditions must be checked individually. From 1 October 2026, a family member staying no more than one year needs comprehensive health insurance under the revised rules.
Do students have to report their address?
For permits covered by the June 2026 rules, students must notify the Swedish Migration Agency of their address within 30 days where the notification requirement applies.
